India has launched diplomatic efforts to find a way out of the Russia-Ukraine war, now in its fourth year. Ukraine itself has disclosed that India has taken up the initiative. With close and friendly ties to both countries, India’s intervention is being watched closely around the world to see whether it can help bring the war to an end. The responses from both Ukraine and Russia are also encouraging. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister has said that India’s proposals for ending the war are broader and more comprehensive than those put forward by countries such as the United States, Turkey and Egypt. It is the first time since the war began that India has directly stepped into efforts to secure a ceasefire.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for actively working towards ending the war. Putin said Modi had good ideas for resolving the issue through mutual agreement. The situation on the battlefield remains grave. The two sides are currently concentrating their long-range attacks on each other’s energy infrastructure. India has proposed a halt to attacks on energy facilities along with a ceasefire in the Black Sea. If this can be achieved, Ukraine has indicated that it would subsequently be prepared for a ceasefire across the entire war zone. Russia has already captured the territories it sought to take in the course of the war, including areas with large Russian-speaking populations. It is unlikely to accept any settlement that requires it to surrender all these territories outright.
Ukraine, meanwhile, insists that the territories of Donetsk and Luhansk, which include a strategically important industrial region and have been captured by Russia, must be returned. US President Donald Trump had proposed a 29-point peace plan to end the war. Its key proposal was for Russia and the United States to exchange the disputed territories. Both Russia and Ukraine rejected the proposal. Western countries have supported Ukraine throughout the war with technological and financial assistance. Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians have fled the areas affected by the Russian invasion, seeking refuge elsewhere in the country and abroad.
Ordinary people have borne the brunt of the war. The conflict, which began on February 24, 2022, has continued without a break for four and a half years. Compounding the situation is the war in West Asia, which has had economic repercussions across the Gulf region and around the world. The sharp rise in oil prices has also put India under pressure. If the war in Ukraine comes to an end, there may be hope that the conflict in West Asia, too, could eventually subside.
Against this backdrop, the world is watching India’s intervention with considerable expectation. India has consistently stood for peace, and its current initiative could offer a fresh diplomatic opening. If it succeeds in helping silence the guns, it could also significantly strengthen India’s standing on the international stage.
