NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court said that the monthly income of homemakers should be considered as Rs 30,000 while determining compensation in road accident cases.
"Homemakers are essential for the progress of the country and a crucial factor in its development path. They work hard for their husbands and children within the four walls of the house. They are the ones who shape the future of the country,” said a bench comprising Justices Sanjay Karol and N. Kotishwar Singh.
This court remarked this while awarding Rs 62.78 lakh as compensation to the family of a homemaker who died in a road accident in Punjab in 2001. The Supreme Court considered the Rs 8.43 lakh awarded by the Punjab and Haryana High Court to be inadequate.
