College student alleges brutal police assault in Alappuzha; family files complaint

ALAPPUZHA: A degree student has alleged that he was brutally assaulted by police in Veeyapuram on suspicion of transporting cannabis. According to the complaint, the assault left him vomiting blood, and he was admitted to Alappuzha Medical College Hospital for three days. The complaint was filed by 20-year-old Mohammed Yasin.

However, Veeyapuram Police denied the allegation, calling the complaint false. According to the police, Yasin made the allegation after his modified car was seized. Police also said that a case had been registered against Yasin's friend, who was travelling with him, for allegedly smoking a cannabis beedi.

The incident took place on July 25. Yasin alleged that police chased and stopped his car after claiming that he had failed to stop during a vehicle inspection. He said he had not noticed the police signal asking him to stop. Later, after police called him and asked him to come to the station, he was intercepted on the way and allegedly assaulted on the roadside.

Yasin also admitted that he had given a lift to his friend Ashwin after meeting him on the road. Police claimed that Ashwin had previously been involved in a cannabis case. An FIR also stated that Ashwin had smoked a cannabis beedi inside the car on the day of the incident. However, Yasin said he was unaware of Ashwin's previous case.

Police seized Yasin's car, alleging that it had illegal modifications and that he had driven it recklessly. Although Yasin underwent a medical examination, police found no evidence that he had consumed drugs. No cannabis or any other narcotic substance was recovered from the car. Yasin said the allegation that he was trying to transport cannabis caused him greater mental distress than the physical injuries he suffered in the alleged assault. His father has submitted complaints to the Chief Minister, the Home Minister and the Alappuzha District Police Chief, alleging that his son was subjected to physical assault and mental harassment.
