Dance video brought personal joy, but there are legal issues: VD Satheesan on viral AI video

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister V D Satheesan said the AI-generated video of him dancing that went viral on social media had brought him considerable personal happiness, but also involved certain legal issues. Satheesan was speaking at the graduation ceremony of Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram. He said a five-year-old child had also approached him in person and told him that his dance was excellent. The Chief Minister's remarks came after Meta removed the controversial video.

Satheesan said the new generation of legal professionals should be prepared to address emerging legal issues arising from the rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI).
“However much technology develops, new legal possibilities and challenges will emerge alongside it,” he said. Legal education should evolve with changing circumstances so that legal professionals are equipped to identify and address such issues, he added.

Developments in artificial intelligence, machine learning, quantum computing and biotechnology are bringing significant changes to the legal field, Satheesan said. The increased use of AI has created new legal issues in areas such as copyright and intellectual property rights.
Technology-related legal challenges are also increasing in areas including piracy in the film industry, he said.

Law graduates should not limit themselves to legal practice, Satheesan said. Legal scrutiny and the services of legal professionals are required in various sectors, including government institutions and corporate organisations.
Legal professionals should enter emerging areas of law in response to changing technological and social circumstances, he said. This would also expand employment opportunities for law graduates.

Law is a living institution and laws and regulations must evolve with changing times, Satheesan said. The Constitution itself has undergone several amendments.
It is essential to amend outdated laws and enact new legislation in response to changing social and economic circumstances, he said.
Satheesan also urged law students to develop strong constitutional awareness and to keep the legal and constitutional framework in mind while speaking, thinking and acting.
