NEW DELHI: An agreement was reached with National Thermal Power Corporation allowing Kerala to procure up to 300 MW of power from the Sinnar project in Maharashtra at a rate of Rs 5.18 per unit.
An understanding was reached to install a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a capacity of 2,000 MWh at NTPC's own site in Kayamkulam. KSEB, NTPC, and NTPC Green Energy Limited will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for this battery storage project. The project is proposed for the site of the currently non-operational Kayamkulam thermal power plant. It will enable the storage of surplus power generated during the day for use at night. This will be the seventh storage system in Kerala and the one with the highest capacity.
NTPC expressed its willingness to supply electricity from the Ramagundam plant. A power purchase agreement will be signed with Kerala for this purpose. The State Government also requested NTPC to set up a dedicated power plant in Kerala, considering long-term requirements.
A decision was also taken to expedite the proceedings for NTPC's 27 MW solar power project in Kayamkulam. The battery storage projects being implemented at Pothencode and Sreekandapuram will be commissioned by March 2027.
This decision was reached during discussions held by Chief Minister VD Satheesan, Electricity Minister Sunny Joseph, and Chief Secretary Bishwanath Sinha with NTPC Chairman and Managing Director Gurdeep Singh.
