THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Director General of Police (DGP) will seek an explanation from ADGP M.R. Ajith Kumar over allegations that he attempted to derail the investigation into the Alappuzha 'rescue operation' case. The DGP is expected to submit his report to the state government only after receiving Ajith Kumar's response.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) recently submitted its further investigation report after addressing the clarifications sought by the DGP. The report reportedly includes additional evidence related to Ajith Kumar's alleged involvement in tampering with the investigation. The further probe was led by SP Shoukath Ali, and the report was submitted at around 7 pm on Thursday.
According to sources, the report contains witness statements, official records, WhatsApp messages and forensic evidence that allegedly indicate Ajith Kumar's role in altering the case diary. The DGP had earlier sought clarification on five specific issues concerning the ADGP's alleged involvement. The original SIT report, submitted on June 23, was returned by the DGP after being kept for 21 days, with directions to provide further clarification.
Meanwhile, the state government has initiated the screening committee process for the appointment of the next DGP. With Fire and Rescue Services Chief Nitin Agarwal due to retire later this month, Ajith Kumar is next in line for promotion to the DGP rank. However, officials say a pending investigation or criminal case could stand in the way of the promotion. There are also allegations that action on the SIT report is being delayed in view of the impending promotion process. Home Department sources said that even if the screening committee recommends Ajith Kumar for promotion, the state government has the authority to withhold it if deemed necessary.
