Heavy rain: Holiday declared for educational institutions in five Kerala districts tomorrow; exams to continue

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala government has declared a holiday for educational institutions in five districts on Wednesday in view of heavy rainfall across the state. The holiday applies to institutions in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Idukki, Wayanad and Kasaragod.

The closure covers professional colleges, schools, CBSE and ICSE schools, Kendriya Vidyalayas, anganwadis, madrassas and other religious educational institutions, tuition centres, coaching centres and special classes. However, scheduled examinations and interviews will be conducted as planned.

In Kasaragod, all educational institutions, including professional colleges, anganwadis, tuition centres, CBSE and ICSE schools, Kendriya Vidyalayas and madrassas, will remain closed.

In Idukki, the holiday applies to all educational institutions, including professional colleges, schools, nurseries, madrassas, Kendriya Vidyalayas, CBSE and ICSE schools, due to continuing heavy rain and strong winds. However, the order does not apply to residential educational institutions where all students stay on campus.

In Pathanamthitta, the district administration said the holiday has been declared because of continuing heavy rain and the operation of relief camps in schools. All educational institutions, including professional colleges, will remain closed on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the District Collector of Kozhikode announced that educational institutions functioning as relief camps will remain closed until the camps are wound up.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Kannur, Wayanad and Kasaragod on Tuesday. The weather department has warned of intensified rainfall across Kerala, with the possibility of 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm of rain within 24 hours, and authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant.
