'Rs 250 to Rs 1000 for popcorn; this trend needs to end'; Mayor VV Rajesh highlights popular issue

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Thiruvananthapuram Mayor VV Rajesh brought up the issue of food items being sold at excessive rates inside movie theatres. Popcorn that costs Rs. 25 in the market is being charged at Rs. 250 in theatres. The Mayor, on a sardonic note, said that it has reached a situation where a moviegoer needs to take up a loan simply to have a tea inside a theatre complex.

“Food items are being sold at extortionate prices in theatres. A family of four, including young children, will have to pay Rs 1000 for popcorn. This is not a healthy trend. Although fixing prices is not within the jurisdiction of the corporation, as a political activist, it is necessary to take a stand on such issues. The matter will be brought to the attention of the government.” Mayor VV Rajesh also clarified that the Legal Metrology Department should strongly intervene in such issues.
