THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Governor R.V. Arlekar has asked Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan to take strong action over the reported symbolic funeral of Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit Vice-Chancellor Dr Ciza Thomas during an SFI protest. The Chief Minister assured the Governor that strong action would be taken.

Arlekar raised the issue when Satheesan visited Raj Bhavan. The Governor said the incident should not be viewed lightly as merely a student protest. Meanwhile, vice-chancellors have written to the Governor and the government seeking strong and stringent action over the protest against Dr Ciza Thomas. The letter was signed by Dr Mohanan Kunnammal, Dr P. Ravindran, Dr Saji Gopinath, Dr D. Mavood, Dr Junaid Bushari, Dr K.K. Saju, Dr V.P. Jagathiraj, Dr A. Bijukumar, Dr T. Sajitha Rani, Dr K.S. Anil and Dr C.R. Prasad.

VC to file complaint

VC Ciza Thomas may file a police complaint on Saturday over the reported symbolic funeral allegedly conducted by SFI members. The Save University Campaign Committee has also submitted a complaint to Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala, seeking action over the incident.
The committee has also sought action against police personnel who remained as bystanders during the incident.

SFI denies report

The SFI has denied reports that a symbolic funeral of the VC was held on Thursday as part of its protest.
SFI unit secretary A. Shyam said there was no electricity at the university theatre and that the protest involved showing a bulb that was not lit in an area with poor lighting at night.
