THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: V. D. Satheesan was not pushed into political exile by the people, but instead carried forward towards the seat of power. His approach, “I will only say what can be done, and I will do what I say”, helped him rise rapidly as a strong political leader in Kerala.
When Satheesan, then Leader of the Opposition, confidently declared that the UDF would return to power with more than 100 seats, many even within his own party reacted with doubt. Some mocked his prediction when he promised “surprises” in the election results. But when the results were announced, the outcome proved him right, with the UDF securing a massive victory.
The biggest reason behind the UDF’s impressive tally of 102 seats was the united functioning of “Team UDF,” with Satheesan serving as its backbone. After the 2021 Assembly election, when the Congress-led opposition was reduced to just 41 seats, Satheesan was chosen to lead a weakened Opposition despite being considered part of the second line of leaders behind figures like Oommen Chandy, Ramesh Chennithala, P. T. Thomas, and Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan.
That marked the beginning of his real political battle. Satheesan frequently challenged Pinarayi Vijayan in the Assembly with sharp and detailed questions, earning public attention and applause. The political clashes between the two leaders often dominated Assembly discussions.
By studying issues in depth, Satheesan was also able to strongly confront ministers like P. Rajeev and K. N. Balagopal during debates.
Election strategy and leadership
The Thrikkakara by-election was Satheesan’s first major test as Opposition leader. Through careful planning and teamwork, the UDF secured victory there. The alliance later repeated its success in Puthuppally and Palakkad, while also slowing down the LDF’s momentum in Chelakkara.
Political observers believe one of the key reasons behind these victories was Satheesan’s effort to bring younger leaders into confidence while also keeping alliance partners united.
Satheesan also took a firm stand when independent MLA P. V. Anvar attempted pressure tactics to enter the UDF after distancing himself from the CPM. Satheesan strongly opposed the move and refused to bend under pressure.
Firm stand on key issues
Satheesan’s strong stand during the controversy involving youth leader Rahul Mamkootathil was also seen as an important moment in his leadership journey. Despite personal closeness, he chose to support what he believed was the right position, even though it upset some within the party.
After the Congress Chintan Shivir in Wayanad, Satheesan predicted that the Congress alone could win around 65 seats in the Assembly election. The claim initially created doubts within the party, but he stood by his assessment. When the results were declared, the Congress won 63 seats, strengthening his image as a leader with political foresight.
Public support
These positions and leadership qualities helped Satheesan build the image of a strong and reliable leader among the public. Long before the official discussions on the Chief Minister’s post began, many people across political lines had already started seeing him as the most suitable choice for the position.
