'Preserve all CCTV footage, body camera recordings'; HC issues notice to central govt, police

NEW DELHI: The High Court issued notices to the Central Government and the Delhi Police on a petition filed by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) alleging police brutality against students during their march to Parliament. The court directed the government to preserve all CCTV footage, body camera recordings and other digital documents related to the incident as per the procedure. The case was posted for further hearing on September 11.

The petition was heard by a division bench comprising Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay and Justice Tejas Karia. The court asked the government and the police to file their counter affidavits within the next four weeks. Additional Solicitor General SV Raju appeared for the Delhi Police and the central government. Senior advocates N Hariharan, Gopal Sankaranarayanan and Vikas Singh appeared for the petitioners.

The five-km area around Jantar Mantar became a battlefield following the CJP's Parliament march demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Over a hundred students and policemen were injured. Hundreds of people were arrested and removed from the location. There was a tight security cordon as the monsoon session of Parliament was ongoing.
