THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala has a higher incidence of stroke than the national average, according to a new study. The state records 135 cases per one lakh people, against the national average of 93. The findings come from the Stroke Registry in Thiruvananthapuram, functioning under the Health Department. Delays in recognising stroke symptoms and getting patients to hospital in time continue to worsen outcomes.
Strokes are also rising among people below 45. Lifestyle diseases, lack of sleep and excessive consumption of fast food are among the factors that lead to stroke. Smoking and alcohol use also contribute.
The condition is deadly. About 25 per cent of those who suffer a stroke die. Among survivors, 40 to 50 per cent are left with long-term disabilities, big or small. Stroke is the second leading cause of death worldwide.
Quick action can make a big difference, doctors say. If symptoms are recognised early and the patient receives treatment without delay, lives can be saved and the extent of disability reduced, said Dr Fiju Chacko, head of the Neurology Department at Jubilee Mission Hospital, Thrissur.
“If you notice these symptoms, do not wait for them to go away or try to treat them at home. Seek emergency medical help immediately,” said Dr Renjith P V, head of the Neurology Department at Indira Gandhi Co-operative Hospital, Thalassery.
