Farmer’s death in elephant attack sparks Athirappilly shutdown; tourist routes blocked

THRISSUR: A dawn-to-dusk shutdown (hartal) is underway in Athirappilly panchayat today following the tragic death of a 65-year-old farmer in a wild elephant attack. Local residents have called for the strike, effective until 6:00 PM, to protest the persistent wildlife menace and demand immediate government intervention.
Aggrieved locals have also announced plans to block the Chalakudy-Anamala interstate highway starting at 10:00 AM today to draw attention to their grievances.

The victim, identified as Mohanan, was trampled to death in the early hours of Saturday around 2:45 AM. According to community members, Mohanan had stepped out into his yard with a lit torch to chase away a wild elephant that was destroying his crops.
The animal charged at him, striking him down with its trunk before trampling him. Though he was rushed to a nearby medical facility immediately after the encounter, he was pronounced dead upon arrival. His body has since been moved to a private hospital morgue in Chalakudy for further procedures.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage among residents, who state that the region has faced relentless wild elephant incursions for years. Locals noted that elephants had been entering the residential area consecutively for the past four days. Just a day prior to the fatal attack, an elephant had breached Mohanan’s property, causing extensive damage to his cultivation.
Community leaders emphasise that despite frequent crop raids and growing threats to human life, no permanent safety measures have been implemented by forest or district authorities, prompting today's public blockade.
