KOZHIKODE: A major fire broke out at the Red Star Press on Vellayil Road in Kozhikode city. The incident happened around noon today. A major tragedy was averted due to the timely intervention of the fire department. The fire has now been completely brought under control. The fire first broke out outside the press where paper rolls were stored. Since it was Sunday, the press was closed. Therefore, no employees were inside at the time of the accident.

A woman who noticed smoke bellowing from the building alerted the locals. The fire brigade was informed immediately and they reached the spot and extinguished the fire. Most of the paper rolls kept outside the press were burnt. The outer units of the AC on top of the building melted and were destroyed due to the intensity of the fire. The initial conclusion is that a short circuit was the cause of the fire. However, the authorities are conducting further investigations.

This is one of the main presses in Kozhikode city. Janayugam newspaper was earlier printed from here. The paper rolls required for Janayugam are still kept here. Some English newspapers are also printed from here.
