Thiruvambady’s fireworks captain passes away; Mundathikode blast toll hits 15 as fireworks contractor Satheesan dies

THRISSUR: The devastating Mundathikode fireworks tragedy has claimed its 15th victim. Satheesan (46), a prominent fireworks contractor who had been battling for his life at Thrissur Medical College, succumbed to his injuries today.

Satheesan, who was in charge of the Thiruvambady section's fireworks, had been on ventilator support after suffering burns to more than 90 percent of his body.

Legacy in flames

Satheesan was more than just a contractor; he was a custodian of a deep-rooted family tradition, having entered the industry in the footsteps of his father, Manipappan. For decades, his father served as a licensee for the Thiruvambady section, and Satheesan honoured that legacy by becoming a master of the craft under his own banner, Mani Fireworks. He was a visionary who balanced tradition with innovation, most notably by orchestrating the first "friendly fireworks" display at the 2024 Thrissur Pooram—a historic collaboration between the Paramekkavu and Thiruvambady devaswoms. His expertise was a cornerstone of the region's cultural identity, as he spearheaded major displays at the Uthralikkavu and Kuttiyankavu Poorams, as well as several other prominent festivals across Thrissur.

Recovery and identification efforts

The aftermath of the blast remains grim as authorities work to support the grieving families:

• Repatriation: The bodies of nine victims were handed over to relatives following postmortem examinations.
• The Unidentified: One body remains unrecognisable despite a completed postmortem, and four individuals are still officially listed as missing.

Government aid and compensation

The State Government has moved to provide immediate financial relief to those shattered by the accident:

• Ex-gratia: Families of the deceased will receive ₹14 lakh each.
• Medical Support: Those injured in the blast will receive ₹2 lakh from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund.
• Additional Aid: These state funds will be supplemented by previously announced central assistance packages.
