THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Schools in Kerala will reopen on June 1, marking the official start of the new academic year. In preparation for the return of students, the Department of General Education has issued comprehensive guidelines regarding administrative arrangements and safety protocols.

While the Central Government has established six years as the age limit for Class I admission, Kerala will maintain its current policy of five years for the upcoming session. Admission procedures for all classes are scheduled to begin on May 2. On this same date, all government, aided, and recognized unaided schools following the state syllabus must publish the promotion lists from the previous academic year, ensuring the inclusion of students from study support programs.

Safety remains a primary focus, with all requirements outlined in the school safety manual slated for completion by the end of May. Authorities must ensure that all school buildings possess valid fitness certificates. Furthermore, potential hazards in the vicinity must be addressed by cutting down dangerous trees and constructing protective walls around wells and ponds to ensure a secure environment for all children.

The Department of General Education has further clarified policies regarding student entry and campus conduct to ensure an equitable and healthy environment.

In accordance with the Right to Education (RTE) Act, the admission process is designed to be accessible and stress-free:

  • No Entrance Testing: Schools are strictly prohibited from conducting entrance exams or interviews for student admission.
  • Prohibition of Fees: For students in Classes I through VIII, schools may not charge any admission fees or capitation fees.
  • Inclusive Enrollment: Children migrating from abroad or other states, as well as those unable to produce immediate documentation, must be granted temporary admission to ensure their education is not interrupted while they gather the necessary paperwork.

New regulations have also been introduced to protect the physical and social well-being of the student body:

  • Traffic Control: To prevent accidents, a strict speed limit of 10 km/h has been mandated for all vehicles operating within school premises.
  • Anti-Drug Initiatives: The 'No to Drugs' campaign will be implemented with renewed vigour across all campuses, focusing on aggressive awareness and prevention programs to keep schools drug-free.
