THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Fresh off a taxing internal battle to finalise the Chief Minister, the Congress party in Kerala now faces its next high-stakes challenge: appointing a new President for the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC). With the incumbent chief, Sunny Joseph, all but confirmed for a ministerial berth, the race for his successor has ignited a complex debate over communal and caste-based equations.

Historically, Sunny Joseph was appointed to succeed K. Sudhakaran to maintain Christian representation within the party leadership. While senior leaders Benny Behanan and Anto Antony remain frontrunners if the party sticks to this precedent, there is growing momentum for a shift. If the leadership pivots toward Dalit representation, Kodikunnil Suresh emerges as the strongest contender.

However, the evolving composition of the new cabinet adds another layer of complexity. With over half a dozen Christian ministers and a similar number of Muslim representatives expected from the UDF fold, the party is weighing whether the KPCC top post should remain with the Christian community. Given that the Chief Minister’s office is set to be occupied by a leader from the Nair community, political observers suggest that the presidency might be offered to a representative from the Ezhava community to ensure social balance.

Formal deliberations for the KPCC chief—and the restructuring of District Congress Committees (DCCs) where several heads were recently elected as MLAs—will follow the cabinet's swearing-in. The process is expected to be volatile; insiders predict that the two heavyweights who missed out on the Chief Minister’s chair will seek to exert significant influence over these organisational appointments to safeguard their interests.
