While we’re all adjusting to the rising mercury in Kerala, we aren't the only ones looking for a break from the heat. Our local wildlife—specifically snakes—are currently on the hunt for "thermal refugia," or naturally air-conditioned spots to escape the scorching sun.
Unfortunately, your favourite pair of sneakers or outdoor sandals might look like the perfect five-star resort to a wandering reptile.
Science of the Sneaker
Why are snakes so attracted to our footwear? It isn't personal; it’s biology.
Cool Shadows: Snakes are ectotherms, meaning they rely on their environment to regulate body temperature. A dark, enclosed shoe offers a cool microclimate when the ground outside is hitting 40°C.
The "Den" Factor: To a snake, a boot is essentially a hollow log—a secure, tight space where they feel protected from predators.
A Snack Bar: Sweat and moisture can attract insects or small frogs. Where there is prey, a predator will eventually follow.
Don’t panic—Just prepare
You don’t need to stop wearing shoes; you just need to change your routine. Here are four simple habits to keep your family safe this summer:
The "Tap and Tilt" Rule: Before putting your foot into any shoe left near a doorway or sit-out, pick it up (ideally with a stick or while wearing gloves) and give it a firm shake upside down. Give the toe area a few good taps against the floor.
Elevate and Enclose: If possible, avoid leaving shoes on the floor. Use a closed shoe rack or keep your footwear inside the house during the peak summer months.
Light Up the Porch: Snakes prefer moving under the cover of darkness. Keeping your entryways well-lit and clear of clutter like old cardboard boxes or dry leaves will discourage them from loitering.
Keep the "SARPA" App Ready: Being prepared is the best way to stay calm. Having the Kerala Forest Department's SARPA app on your phone ensures that if you do find a "hitchhiker," a professional rescuer is just a tap away.
