SABARIMALA: Two of the stone pillars holding up the Pathinettampadi (18 divine steps) leading to the holy shrine in Sabarimala will be demolished before the start of the Mandala season. The pillars have proved to be an obstruction for pilgrims climbing the steps. The pillars are also making work difficult for police personnel deployed to help pilgrims ascend the steps. In the study it was also found that the pillars were slowing down the passage of pilgrims, thus leading to a more toiling rush.

The architects associated with the pillar were summoned to Sannidhanam and instructed to demolish it. The roof was made to prevent rain from obstructing the padipuja and to protect the Pathinettampadi(18 divine steps). The roof rests on six carved stone pillars. The Hyderabad-based company constructed the roof as an offering for Rs 70 lakhs.

Although there was a permanent roof earlier, the new one was installed just three years ago. In a Devaprashnam (astrological consultation) done three years ago, it was found that the roof was hindering sunlight from directly falling on the Kodimaram (flagstaff). Thus, the old one was demolished.
