MALAPPURAM: Police have registered a case of unnatural death following the demise of a woman after giving birth at home. The deceased is Asma (35), a native of Chattiparamba, Malappuram. Asma died during her fifth delivery. Her first two deliveries had taken place in hospitals, while the remaining three, including the latest, occurred at home. The inquest procedures have been completed, and the post-mortem is scheduled for tomorrow.
Reportedly, Asma and her husband Sirajuddin opted for acupuncture treatment as the method of childbirth. Asma gave birth at around 6 PM yesterday. It was only around 9 PM that Sirajuddin realized his wife had passed away. He then took the body to their house in Perumbavoor. The police arrived later and moved the body to the Perumbavoor Taluk Hospital. The newborn is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Perumbavoor.
Asma’s family told the police that although Asma experienced severe labor pains, she was not taken to the hospital. They claimed that she cried and pleaded to be taken to the hospital, but Sirajuddin refused. He is said to have relied on traditional medicine and held strong beliefs in rituals and superstitions.
Sirajuddin is originally from Alappuzha. The family had been living in a rented house in Chattiparamba, Malappuram, for the past one and a half years. It is said that even the neighbors were unaware that the couple had four children. They mention that Asma used to step out only to drop the kids off at the school van. While locals had seen the children studying in ninth grade, second grade, and LKG, no one knew there was another baby in the house.
