KOTTAYAM: Opposition leader VD Satheesan on Thursday said that the state government was a complete failure in handling the flood disaster. Speaking to the media, Satheesan said that there was a delay in declaring a red alert despite knowing that a low pressure formed over the Arabian sea was going to wreak havoc in the state. He also pointed out that a delay of 21 hours had occurred in launching the rescue operations in Kokkayar.

"After coming to power for the second time, the government has been reluctant to accept any kind of criticism. The CM is in the midst of flatterers. Based on the facts, we said that the State Disaster Management Authority was a failure. NASA and the Indian Meteorological Department had made it clear that the low-pressure area formed in the Arabian Sea was moving towards the Kerala coast. However, no red alert was announced despite knowing that the state was going to receive extreme rainfall. A warning was issued at 1 pm after heavy rains. We are the people's representatives in the areas severely affected by the floods in 2018. We are learning from various agencies about the areas that will be affected if one or two feet of water rises in the river. None of this was done by the government. The government did nothing," he said.

"What did the government study after the 2018 floods? It was the Chief Minister himself who announced the 'Room for the River' project after visiting the Netherlands. What action did he take in this regard? We had repeatedly demanded that the flood warning system should be scientifically reorganized and strengthened. However, it seems that the government has not learnt the lessons even after 4 years. In the present scenario, anyone who questions this will be called a traitor. Pinarayi has the same stance as Modi," he added.
