THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Human Rights Commission has registered a case and ordered an inquiry into a complaint that a baby, which sustained serious injuries to her fingers, had to wait for 36 hours for surgery without food and water.

Human Rights Commission chairman, Justice Anthony Dominic, asked the director of medical education to conduct an investigation and submit a report within four weeks. The complaint was lodged against doctors in the anesthesia, orthopedic and plastic surgery departments. The child who sustained injury is the daughter of an Assam native. The baby was referred from the general hospital to the medical college.

As per the complaint, the doctor in the plastic surgery department delayed the surgery by claiming that the injury was not serious. Although the anesthesia procedures were completed the next day, the plastic surgeon did not come to work. The other doctors at the plastic surgery department were not ready for the surgery.

Ragam Rahim, a human rights activist, said in a complaint that what happened at the medical college was a serious human rights violation. The Commission will take further action after receiving the report.
