THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The price of vegetables, which skyrocketed in the month of September due to Onam and the wedding season, continues to soar even after one month. Some items have become more expensive than during Onam. The price of beans and carrots crossed the 100 mark. One kg of lemon costs Rs 115-120. According to traders, the prices remain high due to the rains in the neighbouring states and the increase in diesel prices. Meanwhile, the price of carrots, beans, lemon etc. in Tamil Nadu is less than Rs.60.
Even though government agencies, including Horticorp, are selling vegetables at relatively low prices, they are unable to control the prices of vegetables coming from other states in the public market. Although government sources say domestic production of vegetables has increased, its reflection is not visible in the public market.
