THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala has increased milk prices by Rs 6 per litre while neighbouring state Tamil Nadu has reduced Rs 3. This was one of DMK’s election promise which Chief Minister Stalin implemented on November 4. In TN, the milk sale is through Aavin, a state government cooperative company. There is also a discount card. The government has provided subsidies to Aavin to make up for the loss due to the reduction in milk price.
The price of toned milk(blue) has decreased to Rs 40 from Rs 43. For card holders, it’s Rs 37. Standardised milk (green): Rs 44(new rate), Rs 47(old).
In Karnataka, the milk price was increased by Rs 3 on September 11, which was a hike after 3 years. Now milk costs Rs 40 per litre. The sale is through the Karnataka Milk Federation.
With the recent hike, Kerala has become the south Indian state that charges highest prices for milk. Now the price of Milma blue cover milk will be Rs 52 per litre. The price of cattle feed was increased by Rs 4 per kg. That is Rs 200 hike for per sack. The dairy farmers ask how the hike in milk price will benefit them when the cattle feed price has been increased.
The price of milk coming from neighbouring states will also increase from December 1.
