NAGOYA: India finished fourth in the 20th edition of the Asian Games with a golden finish in the final days, despite not having a strong start. India won a total of 85 medals, including 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze.
India could lose the fourth spot only if a player from Uzbekistan wins gold in the equestrian jumping singles event, the only event remaining today.
India had also finished fourth at the previous Asian Games in Hangzhou, but had crossed the 100-medal mark with a total of 106 medals.
India’s competitions ended yesterday. The country won five gold medals and two each in silver and bronze on the final day of its campaign. India retained the men’s hockey gold by defeating Malaysia in the final, and the victory helped the country move past Uzbekistan to secure fourth place in the medal tally. The Indian men’s cricket team also retained its gold medal by defeating Pakistan in the final. Malayali player Sanju Samson was part of the team.
Seventeen-year-old Kumkum Mohod won gold in the women’s recurve individual archery event, while Pranavi Urs claimed gold in the women’s individual golf event. Aman Sehrawat won gold in the men’s 57kg wrestling category. The Asian Games will conclude today.
