NEW DELHI: The video of celebrated playback singer Alka Yagnik receiving the Padma Bhushan from the Indian President ignited a discussion on social media for odd reasons. Alka, the melodic voice behind many iconic Bollywood songs, used to be in the limelight till a few years ago.
Not many noticed Alka's silent disappearance from the spotlight. For the last two years, Alka turned a recluse and didn't make a comeback on television or in the playback singing field. The singer made her reappearance during the Padma award ceremony yesterday, raising many eyebrows. Alka looked frail and very different from what she used to be. The singer walked to the podium with the assistance of a staff member. Before taking the award, she even touched the feet of PM Modi in reverence.
With discussions ongoing on social media, the 60-year-old singer took to Instagram to make a clarification.
"For the last two years, I have stayed away from the spotlight, from public appearances, and from sharing much of my journey. Many of you knew I was going through difficult health, and through it all, your love, prayers, messages, and unwavering support have stayed with me every step of the way.
"Today, as I stepped out to receive one of the highest civilian honours in the country - the distinguished Padma Bhushan, I did so with a heart full of gratitude. This moment feels especially meaningful because it marks not just a recognition of my work, but a reminder of the strength that comes from love, hope, and resilience... I am slowly finding my way back. Today, I didn't just accept an award - I felt the love of millions who have been a part of my journey.” Alka wrote on social media.
Alka has earlier clarified that she suffers from rare sensory neural hearing loss. Sensorineural hearing loss can affect both ears.
Since the post appeared on Instagram, there has been an outpouring of support from people within the industry and fans.
