NEW DELHI: Veteran Malayalam superstar Mammootty has added another milestone to his illustrious career, winning the National Award for Best Actor for his commanding performance in Bramayugam. He shares the honour with Bollywood actor Kartik Aaryan, who was recognised for his acclaimed portrayal in Chandu Champion. The winners were announced as part of the 72nd National Film Awards, celebrating the finest Indian films certified in 2024.
Mammootty's portrayal of the enigmatic Kodumon Potti in Rahul Sadasivan's black-and-white folk horror film Bramayugam received widespread critical acclaim for its intensity, restraint and psychological depth. The performance had already earned him the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor, and many critics and film enthusiasts had tipped it as a frontrunner for the National Award.
With this victory, Mammootty further cements his place among Indian cinema's greatest actors. The award adds another National Award to a career spanning over five decades, during which he has delivered some of Malayalam cinema's most celebrated performances.
Kartik Aaryan, meanwhile, secured his first National Award for Best Actor for his transformative performance in Chandu Champion. Directed by Kabir Khan, the sports biographical drama saw the actor portray Paralympic gold medallist Murlikant Petkar, earning praise for his physical transformation and emotionally charged performance.
In the Best Actress category, Yami Gautam was honoured for her performance in Article 370. The political thriller, in which she played intelligence officer Zooni Haksar, was widely appreciated for its gripping narrative and Gautam's powerful portrayal, making it one of the standout performances of the year.
The recognition for Mammootty, Kartik Aaryan and Yami Gautam reflects the National Awards' continued celebration of outstanding performances across Indian cinema, with this year's honours spanning multiple languages and genres.
