Actress Nazriya Nazim is gearing up for a strong comeback in Tamil cinema with Scene, starring Suriya. But even before the film hits the screens, her outfit at a promotional event in Dubai has become a talking point on social media.
The event, held recently, was attended by Suriya, Nazriya, Naslen and other members of the cast. Nazriya turned up in a gown, but her outfit soon became the subject of online debate, with some social media users questioning her choice of attire.
A section of users argued that both men and women should dress modestly in public. Others, however, were quick to call out the criticism, insisting that Nazriya has every right to wear what she likes.
Interestingly, some of the criticism also brought up an old controversy involving a song featuring Dhanush. One comment took a swipe at Nazriya, recalling allegations that she had objected to a scene in which her midriff was shown, claiming that the visible portion belonged to someone else, and had taken legal action against the director.
“After all, Nazriya! Wasn’t she the one who created a stir over showing her midriff in a song with Dhanush?” read the sentiment behind one of the comments.
Other reactions included remarks such as “What a fuss she made back then over showing her midriff” and “The idol in my mind has fallen apart.”
One user even claimed to have initially mistaken her pictures for AI-generated images, saying it was only after watching the video that they realised the appearance was real.
However, Nazriya has her share of supporters, too. Many have questioned what is supposedly wrong with her outfit, arguing that the actress does not need anyone’s approval to decide what she wears.
Some fans have also dismissed the suggestion that actresses dress a certain way simply to get film opportunities. They argued that Nazriya is capable of producing films on her own terms if she chooses to.
Nazriya has also shared pictures of herself in the outfit on her Instagram page.
For now, her Dubai appearance has sparked a familiar social media debate: while some users continue to police what actresses wear, others believe that an outfit should not become a reason to judge a woman.
