MUMBAI: A 19-year-old youth has been arrested for stealing 21 sovereigns of gold jewellery from his uncle's house to buy a luxury SUV. The accused has been identified as Samar Chavan. The incident took place in Maharashtra's Kolhapur district. The police have also taken into custody the jewellery shop owner who bought the stolen gold.
According to the police, Samar stole the jewellery from the house of his uncle, Umesh Maruti Chavan, about a month ago. He then sold the gold for Rs 10 lakh and used the money to buy a Mahindra Thar.
After bringing the new vehicle home, Samar even invited his uncle to attend a pooja organised to mark the occasion. However, Umesh discovered the theft when he went to take out his jewellery to wear for the ceremony.
Interestingly, the jewellery belonging to Umesh's grandmother, which was also kept in the house, remained untouched. Only the jewellery belonging to Umesh and his wife was stolen. This strengthened the family's suspicion that someone close to them was behind the theft.
Umesh filed a complaint at the Kodoli police station two days ago, following which the police launched an investigation.
During the probe, the police became suspicious after learning that Samar had recently purchased a new vehicle. They began investigating how he had arranged the money for the purchase.
As the investigation progressed, Samar reportedly confessed to the theft. The police subsequently took him and the jewellery shop owner into custody.
