Union Home Minister Amit Shah to speak in Parliament; JPC scrutiny likely for FCRA bill

NEW DELHI: The central government expressed their willingness to discuss in parliament the police crackdown on students near Jantar Mantar during the CJP protest. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju told Lok Sabha that Home Minister Amit Shah will attend the discussion. However, Rijiju set a condition which led to a ruckus. As per the Union minister, the opposition should not run away from the discussion when Amit Shah comes to Parliament. Rijiju also demanded that the opposition listen to the Union Home Minister peacefully and not shout slogans.

The opposition, which did not yield to this, hardened its stance by demanding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi also make a statement on the Ayodhya donation. It was also clarified that there would be no compromise on both issues. The opposition has been protesting for 16 days, demanding that Amit Shah respond to the student protest. Amit Shah did not come to Parliament on any of these days. Amit Shah was supposed to introduce two bills on Monday, including the bill to change the name of Kerala to 'Keralam'.

There are only three days left for the monsoon session of Parliament to end. The opposition has decided to continue non-cooperation in both the Houses if the Centre is not ready to discuss the Ayodhya issue.

Meanwhile, there are indications that the Centre is attempting to woo opposition parties, including the DMK and the Sharad Pawar faction of the NCP, to pass the constituency delimitation bill. However, both these parties oppose the FCRA bill. In this situation, the Centre is considering sending the FCRA bill to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) without inviting any provocation. The bill may be discussed in the Lok Sabha the day after tomorrow.
