NEW DELHI: India is moving to join the French-led Future Combat Air System (FCAS) programme for the development of sixth-generation fighter aircraft, marking a new step in the country's efforts to build advanced combat aircraft.

The Defence Ministry has initiated efforts towards India's participation in the programme and informed the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence about the development. Discussions with France are ongoing.

The move comes as India continues to pursue its own fifth-generation fighter aircraft programme, the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). India is also focusing on developing advanced fighter aircraft and related technologies domestically instead of relying entirely on imports.

India is also pursuing the development of a new high-thrust fighter aircraft engine with French company Safran for the AMCA programme. The engine is expected to be in the 110–120-kilonewton class and is part of India's efforts to develop greater indigenous capability in fighter aircraft propulsion.

The existing fleet of 260 Sukhoi Su-30 MKI aircraft is also being upgraded under the 'Super Sukhoi' programme.

Sixth-generation capability

  • India is seeking substantial technology sharing as part of any potential participation in the programme, rather than limiting its role to that of a market or funding partner.
  • The FCAS concept envisages manned fighter aircraft operating alongside autonomous drones, or 'loyal wingmen', along with artificial intelligence, networked combat systems and advanced stealth technologies.
  • The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence has sought a clear roadmap and timeline for India's sixth-generation fighter capability.
