NEW DELHI: The Philippines is looking to acquire more BrahMos missiles from India to strengthen its defence capabilities amid escalating tensions with China in the South China Sea. Negotiations for the potential purchase of around five additional BrahMos systems, comprising nearly 60 missiles, have reportedly reached the final stage. The deal is estimated to be worth between $700 million and $800 million (approximately Rs 6,300 crore to Rs 7,200 crore).
In 2022, the Philippines signed a $375-million agreement with India to acquire three batteries of the BrahMos shore-based anti-ship missile system. With deliveries under the agreement nearing completion, Manila is now looking to expand its missile capabilities. Philippine Department of National Defence spokesperson Arsenio Andolong told Reuters that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. had expressed his desire to acquire additional BrahMos missiles.
Philippine Defence Secretary Gilberto Teodoro had also expressed the country's interest in acquiring more systems during the 3rd Delhi Defence Dialogue, held virtually. The Philippines has also shared a list of requirements with Indian authorities to make the missile system better suited to its geographical conditions and operational requirements.
Jointly developed by India and Russia, the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile can be launched from land, sea and air platforms.
Apart from the Philippines, India has signed an agreement with Vietnam for the supply of BrahMos missiles and announced their supply to Indonesia.
