MUMBAI: Three newborns died after a fire broke out at a government hospital in Maharashtra’s Amravati early Monday morning. 12 infants are undergoing treatment. The accident happened at the District Women's Hospital in Amravati at around 3.30 am today. The accident was caused by an explosion after a ventilator exploded on the third floor. The fire then spread. There were 39 babies in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at the time.
As soon as the fire broke out, doctors and other hospital staff rushed out with the babies. However, three babies died of smoke inhalation and burns. The condition of six newborns is critical. They have been shifted to a nearby super specialty hospital for treatment.
