CHENNAI: A woman leader of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has sparked controversy after allegedly hurling abusive remarks at Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. The remarks were made while DMK MP Kanimozhi was seated on the stage. The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) subsequently protested after a video of the incident circulated on social media.
The woman leader made the alleged remarks while accusing the TVK government of failing to fulfil its promises. She repeatedly called Vijay a “dog” and made other derogatory comments, including a remark that he would have cotton stuffed in his nose. She also alleged that Vijay's government had come to power through social media reels and was merely continuing the subsidy schemes implemented by the previous government led by M. K. Stalin.
The video reportedly shows Kanimozhi appearing uncomfortable with the remarks, while Chennai Mayor Priya Rajan is seen laughing. The TVK has demanded that cases be registered against the woman leader and others present on the stage, including Kanimozhi. TVK workers have also criticised Kanimozhi and Priya Rajan, questioning whether such conduct was consistent with progressive politics and accusing the DMK of encouraging personal attacks against the Chief Minister.
The controversy comes amid an ongoing political confrontation between the ruling TVK and the opposition DMK in Tamil Nadu. Recently, police registered cases against DMK leaders A. Raja and P. K. Sekar Babu over alleged derogatory remarks against Chief Minister Vijay.
Vijay had earlier stated in the Assembly that political criticism was acceptable, but personal attacks and derogatory remarks against women would not be tolerated.
