KOCHI: A Senior Civil Police Officer attached to the Munambam police station was found dead at his residence in Kedamangalam on Tuesday. The deceased has been identified as 43-year-old Binu Varghese.
According to local sources, the incident occurred in the afternoon when Binu returned home from the police station for lunch. After arriving, he reportedly went to the upper floor of his house, which is roofed with sheets, to make a phone call. When he did not return for an extended period, his father, Varghese, went upstairs to check on him and discovered him hanging.
With the assistance of neighbours, Binu was rushed to the Paravur Taluk Hospital, but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Binu is survived by his wife, Sini, who works as a nurse at the Paravur Don Bosco Hospital, his mother, Baby, and his two children, Aldrin and Alan Juda. His wife and mother were present at the residence when the incident took place.
Colleagues and close friends noted that Binu had been under considerable distress over the past few days. The emotional strain was reportedly linked to a recent social media campaign targeting personnel at the Munambam police station. The online backlash followed an incident last Sunday in Ayyampilly, where a housewife was assaulted and injured with an iron broom by a neighbour. Friends stated that the misleading reports and criticism circulating online had deeply upset him in the days leading up to his death.
The local police have initiated an investigation into the matter to ascertain further details.
