KOZHIKODE: A cyber fraud gang started targeting not locals this time but the MLAs and MPs in the state. They are into spreading fake videos on social media for investment fraud, including in the name of the Prime Minister.
On July 6, Vidya Balakrishnan MLA received a phone call, claiming to be from the Wayanad MP's office. She was then promised a ministerial position for three crores. Vidya says that the fraudsters called many MLAs and demanded various amounts of money. After this, the fraudsters tried reaching the MPs, Shafi Parambil and Dean Kuriakose.
Priyanka Gandhi MP's private secretary DS Rajkumar filed a complaint with the police chief and Wayanad SP in the incident. Meanwhile, it is learnt that the scam is being carried out using another phone number in Rajkumar's name. The scam is also being carried out by circulating fake TV channel videos in the names of Narendra Modi, the Union Home Minister, the Finance Minister, and others. The content claims that by investing Rs 21000, one can earn up to Rs 150 crore per month.
If you click on the link in the videos, you will be taken to a website modelled after English newspapers. Then you have to enter your name, email ID, and phone number. As soon as you register, you will receive a phone call. You will be encouraged to make a deposit. There is a special app for this. You will be rewarded for the first few transactions. After gaining trust, the fraudsters will start work and extort the money.
