KOCHI: K. J. Ameesha, a Class VII student of BVHSS, Nayarambalam, Ernakulam, won gold in the sub-junior 600m event at the State School Sports Meet. However, the 12-year-old's achievement came despite severe financial hardships and the threat of losing her home. Now, her dream of having a safe home is set to become a reality.
Following a Kerala Kaumudi report highlighting the 12-year-old athlete's struggles and hardships, the Rotary Club of Cochin and Vypin Island has come forward to build a house for her family. Ameesha's family will be included in a project to complete 100 houses whose construction had been left unfinished, providing them with a secure home.
Ameesha had been living with her bedridden grandparents and parents in a leaking makeshift shelter covered with plastic sheets. Meanwhile, a loan taken from a bank by pledging the family's property documents to meet wedding expenses had accumulated to a debt of Rs 6 lakh, including interest, leaving the family facing the threat of foreclosure. The Rotary Club will submit a petition to the Chief Minister seeking a waiver of the debt or assistance from other well-wishers.
'Young athletes like Ameesha deserve support'
"We must stand by young athletes like Ameesha. One crore rupees was contributed to the Rotary Club, and the funds for this initiative will be drawn from that contribution," said K. S. Jolly, Chairman and Director of Sanchari Marine Products and President of the Rotary Club of Cochin and Vypin Island.
