Kerala receives less rain than expected; Pathanamthitta, Thiruvananthapuram record highest rainfall

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala has recorded a significant deficit in rainfall this year, with the state receiving around 22 per cent less rainfall than the normal expected amount, according to figures for the monsoon period up to August.

Seven districts in the state have recorded a significant deficit from their normal rainfall levels. Wayanad has recorded the highest rainfall deficit, at around 51 per cent. Pathanamthitta and Thiruvananthapuram have received the highest amounts of rainfall in the state. In five other districts, rainfall has remained close to the normal levels.

Although some parts of the state received heavy rainfall during the initial phase of the southwest monsoon, the overall rainfall recorded across the state remains significantly below normal.
The rainfall deficit is likely to have implications in the coming days and could adversely affect various sectors, including agriculture and water availability.
