Cyclonic circulation over the North Bay of Bengal; Yellow alert in several districts including Ernakulam

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Hot weather conditions prevailed across the state on Thursday. Yesterday, Punalur recorded a temperature of 35.2 degrees Celsius, while Kottayam and Palakkad districts also reached 35 degrees Celsius. Temperatures exceeded 34 degrees Celsius in Kannur, Kochi, Kozhikode, and Thiruvananthapuram. The Meteorological Department forecast the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall today and tomorrow. A 'Yellow Alert' has been issued for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, and Ernakulam districts today, and for Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Ernakulam, and Palakkad districts tomorrow.

The rainfall is attributed to a cyclonic circulation over the North Bay of Bengal and the adjacent Bangladesh coast intensifying into a low-pressure area. Although a 'Yellow Alert' was issued for Alappuzha and Ernakulam districts yesterday, it was withdrawn as the expected rainfall conditions did not materialise.

The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) warned of potential sea surges—associated with the 'Kallakkadal' phenomenon—along the coast of Thiruvananthapuram district until 8:30 AM today and along the Kanyakumari coast until 11:30 PM tonight.
