KOCHI: The Centre informed the Kerala High Court that granting an AIIMS to Kerala is not a priority presently. The central government explained that states with weak healthcare infrastructure are being given first preference, while Kerala is considered to be ahead in the healthcare sector. However, the high court questioned whether Kerala’s progress in healthcare as a reason for denying the state an AIIMS.
A plea was filed by a group from Kasaragod challenging the Centre’s decision not to approve the demand for AIIMS in Kerala. In its affidavit submitted before the high court in the case, the Centre reiterated its stand. The central government also informed the court that the matter could be considered only if the PMSSY scheme for 2030–31 receives approval.
Meantime, the high court observed that Kerala needs an AIIMS as it is a densely populated state and that the state is entitled to one.
