THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has received approval from the Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission to procure 200 megawatts (MW) of electricity for the next year, a strategic move to mitigate the state’s ongoing power crisis.
The procurement agreement, which is set to commence tomorrow, will remain in effect for one year, ending on July 14, 2026. Under the terms of the contract, the board will purchase electricity at a rate of ₹5.96 per unit.
KSEB plans to acquire approximately 1.4 billion units of electricity over this period, with a total financial outlay estimated at ₹8.4 billion. The power will be supplied through agreements with Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd, Power Plus Trading Solutions Ltd, and NTPC.
This development is expected to alleviate concerns regarding potential power disruptions across the state. Notably, it ensures that electricity supply will remain stable, addressing deep-seated apprehensions among football fans regarding potential power cuts during the highly anticipated FIFA World Cup 2026 final between Argentina and Spain. With millions of fans across Kerala expected to tune in for the final, the board's decision to stabilise the grid is a major relief to viewers ahead of the championship showdown.
