Buses including KSRTC cannot ply on six-lane highway; MVD with new rule

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Department of Motor Vehicles banned buses, including KSRTC, from running on the completed six-lane national highway. The action comes against a backdrop of increased accidents caused by bus drivers breaking the law on the six-lane road. Buses should take service roads instead.

Strict action will be taken, including cancelling the permits of buses plying the national highway in violation of the directive. The condition suggests vehicles not stop anywhere on the six-lane national highways. Stops are on service roads. Access to national highways is allowed only in areas with no service roads. That too is only a temporary arrangement.

Some bus drivers operated their vehicles on the six-lane highway and dropped off passengers right on the road, forcing them to walk for kilometres to exit the highway. Complaints also arose regarding buses travelling in the wrong direction and reversing on the road. Excessive speed led to accidents as well.
