KOZHIKODE: Music director and famous Mappilappattu artist and tabla player Kozhikode Aboobacker (Avukka) passed away. He was 80. He died late Monday night at his home in Areekode’s Ullissery Kunnu. He has been undergoing treatment for a stroke for the past two months.
Aboobacker has composed music for around 3,000 songs. He even composed music for a new song just two days before becoming bedridden. Late film actor Mammukkoya was his classmate.
Prominent singers including K J Yesudas, K S Chithra and M G Sreekumar have sung under his musical direction. Aboobacker was a regular visitor on Mappilappattu stages. He was a favourite tabla player of music maestros Devarajan Master and Bombay Ravi.
He is survived by his wife, K V Zubaida, and children Ghulam Ali, late Fayas, Roshni, Femina and Sajina. His sons and daughters-in-law are Salam Aziz, Aziz Kanhangad, Soudabi and Afseena.
He will be laid to rest Tuesday afternoon at the Mathottam Kabarsthaan Masjid.
