KOTTAYAM: A family came forward with allegations of medical negligence in the death of a young woman who died during treatment at Kottayam Medical College Hospital. Haseena (49), a native of Changanassery, died after undergoing hernia surgery. Alleging medical malpractice, the family filed a complaint with the Gandhinagar police.

Initially, keyhole surgery was performed, followed by open abdominal surgery. The family alleged medical negligence in the second surgery performed. Haseena's husband, Hasankunju, stated that she suffered from fever and shivering for three days straight. He added that she was given only the food prescribed by the hospital and that they had strictly followed all instructions given by the medical staff. However, hospital authorities maintain that the cause of death was an infection.

The surgery was performed at Kottayam Medical College Hospital on September 18. Three days later, the patient was readmitted after developing a fever. Subsequently, the infection at the site of the initial keyhole surgery was removed through open abdominal surgery. The family alleged that the patient's health deteriorated following this procedure. The police stated that an investigation would be launched after examining the complaint.
