THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Heavy rain is expected in Kerala in the coming hours. A 'Yellow Alert' was issued for five districts: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, and Kottayam. Widespread rain is currently occurring across the southern districts and Central Kerala. There is a possibility of strong winds, heavy rainfall, and lightning. The Meteorological Department forecasts that the rain will continue until tomorrow.

A 'Yellow Alert' was declared for Idukki district for tomorrow, with a forecast of isolated heavy rainfall. The Meteorological Department also issued safety guidelines for the public to follow in light of the potential for strong winds and lightning.

INSTRUCTIONS:

• As soon as the first signs of lightning appear, move immediately into a secure building. Remaining in open areas increases the risk of being struck by lightning.
• When there is a possibility of strong winds and lightning, keep windows and doors closed. Avoid standing near doors or windows. Stay inside the building and try to avoid touching walls or the floor as much as possible.
• Disconnect household appliances from the power supply. Avoid being near electrical appliances during a lightning storm.
• Do not use a landline telephone during a lightning storm; however, using a mobile phone is safe.
• If the sky is overcast, avoid playing—whether on terraces or in open spaces—especially if children are involved.
• Do not stand under trees during a lightning storm. Also, do not park vehicles under trees.
