Vocational courses coming to engineering colleges and polytechnics under 4,200-crore Central scheme

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala has been included in a Rs 4,200-crore Central government scheme aimed at modernising technical education by introducing more industry-oriented and vocational courses. Of the total outlay, Rs 2,100 crore will be provided as assistance by the World Bank.

Two committees have been formed to oversee the implementation of the scheme in the state, with Higher Education Principal Secretary Dr B Ashok as chairman. The committees include representatives from the industry and IT sectors, accreditation experts, scientists and secretaries from various government departments.

The scheme aims to reform engineering colleges, polytechnics, technical universities and the Department of Technical Education. Its key objectives include improving the quality, governance, research, innovation, and employability of technical institutions. Around 7.5 lakh students across the country are expected to benefit from the scheme.

Technical courses and syllabi will be revised in line with the National Education Policy. Interdisciplinary learning will also be expanded. The scheme will focus on industry-oriented courses, digital learning methods, internships and incubation centres to improve students' employability and promote research and innovation. Internship opportunities and job-oriented training for students will also be strengthened.

Major support for state institutions

• Government and aided institutions in the state will receive financial assistance worth crores of rupees. A State-Level Assurance Committee and a State Steering Committee have been formed to implement the scheme.
• Central assistance will be provided to help turn academic research into practical products and startups. Digital learning systems and hybrid laboratory facilities will also improve access to quality education for students in rural areas.
• Students will be given mandatory internships and soft-skills training. Online courses will also be introduced for this purpose.
• Technical support will be provided by IITs, IIMs and the AICTE to help ensure academic quality.
