Anchumana Temple

KOCHI: In the bustling urban sprawl of Edappally in Kochi, where modern life moves at a dizzying pace, lies a sanctuary where time slows down to the rhythm of ancient, unbroken traditions. At the historic Anchumana Devi Temple, spirituality is painted in the purest shades of white. Here, the deity of Vellam Bhagavathi possesses a unique preference that dictates every aspect of her worship: everything offered to her must be entirely devoid of colour.

From the moment one steps into the temple premises, the visual consistency is striking. The goddess is adorned exclusively in pristine white garments, and the daily rituals are conducted using only white flowers, such as jasmine and white oleander, alongside traditional tulsi leaves. When the deity is taken out in a ceremonial procession atop an elephant during the annual festival, the traditional golden caparison makes way for a magnificent silver deity-replica, shaded by a stark white silk umbrella.

Even the culinary offerings and the grand festival feast follow this monochromatic code. The deity is offered Vella Nivedyam (white rice offering), and the subsequent feast served to devotees features only white-coloured curries, culminating in a rich, creamy Paal Payasam (milk pudding). Owned and managed by the Viswakarma Dharmo Dharana Samajam, this ancient temple houses Bhuvaneswari as its primary deity. Alongside her, the principal sub-deities are Bhadrakali (Mada-Kali) and Vellam Bhagavathi, who is worshipped here in the benevolent form of Annapoorneswari—the goddess of nourishment. Friday and Monday are considered the most auspicious days for Vellam Bhagavathi, during which twenty-one intricately woven garlands of white flowers are offered to her. While the origins of this all-white tradition remain shrouded in the mists of time, the practice has been fiercely preserved by generations of devotees.

Trek of faith

The uniqueness of the Anchumana Temple extends far beyond its colour palette to its extraordinary festival rituals, particularly the Paraeduppu (receiving ritual offerings). Unlike most temples where the deity’s idol is carried on an elephant or a vehicle, the priest here carries the sacred bust on foot, accompanied by a small retinue. The procession enters the very courtyards and interiors of devotees' homes to accept offerings. Remarkably, this walking pilgrimage extends all the way to Vaikom, located nearly 45 kilometers away. To facilitate this arduous journey of faith, the main doors of the Anchumana Temple remain closed for seven days, a rare scriptural occurrence that underscores the community's dedication.

Silver screen's haven

Beyond its deeply rooted spiritual practices, the temple grounds hold a completely different kind of cultural resonance in contemporary Kerala. For decades, it has served as a legendary lucky charm for the Malayalam film industry. Directors and production houses view the temple as a harbinger of box-office success, making it one of the most shot-on locations in the state.

The expansive temple courtyard was the primary backdrop for the Dileep-starrer blockbuster Ee Parakkum Thalika, while the classic film Ambada Njanane, starring Nedumudi Venu, Menaka, and Shankar, was filmed almost entirely within its precincts. From high-octane family dramas like Valyettan and Friends to over a hundred other films and television serials, the temple’s iconic architecture has graced screens for generations, most notably as the quintessential setting for grand cinematic wedding sequences. Today, it remains a common sight to see leading silver-screen stars rubbing shoulders with everyday devotees, all drawn to the serene, white-clad aura of Edappally’s most fascinating cultural landmark.
