Actor Indrans, who initially entered the film industry as a costume designer before transitioning into minor acting roles, has established himself as a prominent powerhouse in both Malayalam and Tamil cinema. His remarkable journey from a slapstick comedy artist to a profound character actor recently culminated in his acclaimed performance alongside Suriya in the blockbuster Tamil film Karuppu. Amidst this career peak, veteran director Rajasenan has shared insights into a lesser-known, fierce facet of the National and State Award-winning actor.
Unchanged simplicity of a virtuoso
Rajasenan, who has known Indrans since the 1991 film Kadinjool Kalyanam, noted that the actor’s grounded nature remains unchanged despite decades of massive success. He recalled that back then, after having his lunch, Indrans used to curl up and sleep right on top of the costume box, a habit born of simplicity that has not changed one bit even today. The filmmaker emphasised that while Indrans has swept multiple State Film Awards and received top national honours, his humility is entirely genuine and not a calculated act for the cameras.
Zero-tolerance policy for disrespect
Addressing critics who sometimes misinterpret or mock the actor's soft-spoken demeanour, Rajasenan revealed that Indrans possesses a strong, uncompromising streak when pushed too far. People who make fun of his humility do not know his other face. He can lose his temper and fire back heavily if someone continuously pokes or irritates him, making it instantly clear that his modesty is natural rather than a public persona. He refuses to tolerate disrespectful interactions, regardless of the perpetrator's stature in the industry, and will always voice his reaction.
The director added that he deeply respects Indrans for being a deeply honest individual who lives entirely on his own terms. Interestingly, the filmmaker also pointed out that despite being heavily blessed by destiny, Indrans is not overtly religious, noting that he has never seen the actor bowing down or offering traditional prayers on sets.
Early sparks of dramatic brilliance
Reflecting on their past collaborations, Rajasenan recalled a specific emotional sequence from the 1998 hit film Kottaram Veettile Apputtan, starring Jayaram, which foreshadowed Indrans' dramatic prowess.
In the scene, Indrans' character closes down a clinic and hands over the keys to Jayaram's character. Despite being framed as a solo shot for an actor then exclusively known for brief comedic relief, the raw emotion of his performance left the entire crew on set deeply moved. The crew's eyes welled up just watching him perform that single shot. He was strictly a comedy actor back then, and the team anticipated great things from him right from that moment, though they honestly never imagined he would scale such monumental heights in the industry today.
