Protocol row erupts as TVK Chief Vijay sworn in as Tamil Nadu CM

CHENNAI: In a high-profile ceremony that bridged the worlds of South Indian cinema and state politics, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) President Vijay was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu today. The grand event, held at Chennai’s Nehru Stadium, saw a massive turnout of fans and political dignitaries.

However, the celebration has been quickly eclipsed by a brewing political controversy over a break in traditional protocol. Deviating from the long-standing custom where state functions begin with the Tamil anthem, Tamil Thai Vaazhthu, the ceremony instead opened with Vande Mataram. This was followed by the National Anthem, relegating the state anthem to the third position.

The DMK has slammed the move, interpreting it as a gesture to appease the BJP-led Centre by adhering to recent Home Ministry suggestions. This has sparked an intense social media battle between DMK and TVK supporters. DMK loyalists highlighted that even in BJP-ruled West Bengal, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari did not include Vande Mataram in his swearing-in. TVK supporters countered by citing past instances at the Raj Bhavan, claiming that the inclusion of the national song is not unprecedented in the presence of the Governor.

Joining the fray, the CPI expressed stern disapproval, labelling the reshuffling of songs a "violation of protocol." CPI leadership argued that the move undermines Tamil Nadu's unique political heritage and demanded a public explanation. They have further insisted that the Tamil Thai Vaazhthu must retain its primary position during the upcoming Legislative Assembly sessions.
