THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Strict action was taken against police officers, including a gunman of former chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who were involved in the infamous ‘rescue operation’ in Alappuzha. The accused in the case, gunman Anil Kumar, security officer Sandeep, and police officers Shyju, Arun, and Vipin, have been suspended. The DGP issued an order in this regard.

The Special Investigation Team filed a report in the Alappuzha Magistrate's Court, accusing five policemen, after which the action followed. The Special Investigation Team found the five policemen guilty based on the visuals and witness statements. The report also points out that the accused committed serious violations.

In December 2023, gunmen Anil Kumar and Sandeep brutally beat up current MLA AD Thomas and Youth Congress state secretary Ajay Juel Kuriakose after the duo waved a black flag at the Chief Minister's convoy during Nava Kerala Sadas. Pinarayi Vijayan had justified that the gunmen were only doing their job to ensure security and that it was a 'rescue operation'.

The Youth Congress leaders approached the court and filed a case. It was alleged that the ADGP interfered in the police investigation into the incident. It was also reported that the Home Department had concealed the report of SP Chaitra Teresa John, who had recommended action against the gunmen. Chaitra Teresa was also transferred to Kollam.
